Chocolate Opals
Shewa Chocolate Opals are among the original Ethiopian precious opals to enter the international gem market. They were first recognized in the 1990s after deposits were discovered near Mezezo in the historic Shewa region of Ethiopia, long before the famous Welo opals gained worldwide attention.
These extraordinary opals formed millions of years ago within ancient volcanic rhyolite, where silica-rich fluids slowly filled cavities in the rock. Unlike many other opal varieties, Shewa Chocolate Opals naturally develop with rich brown to chocolate colored body tones that create an incredible contrast against their vibrant flashes of green, blue, orange, yellow, and red. This distinctive appearance quickly made them one of Ethiopia's most recognizable and collectible opal varieties.
The material is mined from a relatively small volcanic field near Mezezo in the North Shewa area, making production far more limited than the larger Welo deposits discovered years later. Because of this restricted source, fine examples displaying strong play of color, honeycomb patterns, rolling flash, or broad flash are increasingly sought after by collectors and lapidary artists around the world.
Today, Shewa Chocolate Opals remain an important part of Ethiopia's gem history. Their warm natural body color, volcanic origin, and remarkable play of color represent the beginning of Ethiopia's rise as one of the world's premier sources of precious opal, and each specimen preserves a small piece of that geological and cultural legacy.
